Kalamata olives are named after the city of Kalamata located in Messenia, southern Peloponnese, Greece. The Kalamata olive is a large, black olive with a distinct almond-like shape and a smooth, meaty texture, which makes it perfect for table use. They are usually preserved in wine vinegar or olive oil. Kalamata olives  are the most renowned and unique of all Greek olive varieties.
